Dalwood, Offwell & Stockland Parish Records |

I have included Offwell, as there were a number of Hanns there who appear to be related to those of Dalwood and Stockland. Parts of the Dalwood registers are missing, so it is not always possible to link families together - even within Dalwood. At the beginning of the registers, there are a number of children of Robert and Thomas, but no marriages - even though the registers start in 1568. There are also marriages at this time in Offwell, but no children are produced there until 1596. It would therefore appear that the marriages of Robert and Thomas took place elsewhere and their younger siblings married in Offwell, the children of Offwell’s William and Jean (if any) being born elsewhere. In 1624 William married Eleanor Hoare and had children in Offwell in 1626, 1633 and 1643. Further children (baptised elsewhere?) are buried in 1637 and 1657. In between 1633 and 1643 (in 1639 and 1641) two children are born in Dalwood. Was this the same William? - there being no Hann/Hands included in the 1641/1642 Protestation Rolls for Offwell. In 1629 Robert marries Joan Scarre in Dalwood, but there are no children. There are children of Robert and Joan in Offwell shortly after. At the same time, there was a Roger and Thomasine (Weekes) Han having children in Colyton and a Henry Hand further west in Woodbury. Later Robert and Elizabeth (Boyling) Hand appear in Colyton and Branscombe, John and Susanna Hand appear in Farway, Alexander and Mary Hann/Hand in Ottery St Mary, another Roger Hann in Woodbury and John and Rebeccah (Butcher) Hanne, who married in Dalwood, appear in Widworthy. My own ancestor, John, leaves Dalwood to move east to Stoke Abbott in west Dorset I feel that all of these, somewhat migratory Hanns, are related. However, little of East Devon is included in the IGI and I have not yet been able to identify the parishes where these ‘mystery’ Hann/Hands were born, to connect the branches to the main tree. |
