In 1540 a Henry Hanne is recorded as reeve of the small village of Dalwood, then in Dorset, now in Devon.  Two years later, in the Muster Roll of 1542, there is a Hen. Hane (bowman and only person with their own armour).  It is probably from Henry that the west Dorset Hanns descended, through varied surnames of Han, Hann, Hanne, Hand and Hande to the John Hanne who made his will in Dalwood in 1693
